I've been thinking about getting a headboard , well probably making my own. I've been tossed between making one and slipcovering it in...well...white of course or maybe adding a little vintage wood. I love all those vintage ones out there made of gates and fences etc. but where would I find one of those at a reasonable price?
A few months ago our Pastor told us that the fire marshall had come in and our church that was built in 1899 would have to get our old 112 year old vintage doors replaced with new fire doors!
To make a long story short, I got to take one of those lovely doors home. Here was the headboard I've been looking for!
My husband, daughter and I spent an hour or so hanging this baby, It weighs about 150 lbs.!
It came painted in white. Not sure what kind of wood is underneath but it is solid.
Well here she is! ( I always genderize my new finds!)
In these pics I was going for that lovely unmade bed look but didn't really achieve it. But you get the idea!
Yes, I know, I also need a new bedskirt and nightstands, that's in the project book.
Here is the top end of the door. You can see some of the 2x4 that is helping to support it, this will be painted out...eventually! lol

This is the bottom end with some chips and scuffs.
In this pic you can see that someone painted over it unevenly with a different paint finish.
(I do add some colour and pattern to my bed by way of throw pillows, just not in these pics!)
I was thinking of adding some trim at the top maybe giving it a little ledge with molding.
I was also thinking about giving it a good paint job and maybe adding some contrast with another color/glaze.
I'm actually afraid to distress it due to the fact that there is old paint on it and most old paint was made with lead!
Still not sure what to do with her but I think she needs a little something.

looks fab already - I think the ledge at the top would be a great addition :) If you wore a mask and gloves you could probably distress it without any issue - or send it to be dipped and start again - dipping can make the wood a bit fuzzy and it would need a good sand but still an option - best le xox

Very nice! Personally I wouldn't distress it, I would leave as is or re-paint it. Wow 112 years old!

I love it! How neat is it that your headboard has its' own story (wonder how many people walked through that door in the last 112 years?). The bedding looks great with it too!

ReplyDeleteI love this idea...I always the pictures when I see someone do this. How lucky you were to have this door fall right into your hands! I would leave just as it is but maybe do the ledge. I love the character it has and the history of it. It looks so charming with your white bedding...very lucky girl indeed!

ReplyDeleteIt looks great. Did you put the door knob end at the bottom? You could have put it at the top and then put a nice glass door knob and hung something from it. Also keep your eye open for a piece of wood that is from something else - like a mirror part or such to embellish this with.

ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing old door! 112 years old, I'm in love! I don't think I would do a thing to it. Your bedding is just beautiful! You make me laugh... the unkept look. I've tried with that, too, it never works for me.

It's beautiful just as "she" is! I wouldn't know how to propose paint and such. Not much of an expert in that area. I would think some molding at the top, for instance, might give it some definition.

I love your bed. I've always wanted white bedding. I guess it will have to wait until I don't have black dogs (that shed), and hopefully that will be a long, long wait, 'cause I sure do love my dogs. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI love the door just as it is, but I also think it might look nice to put something in that top panel inset, a trompe l'oeil, or possibly some black & white photographs if you wish something less permanent. The possibilities are endless. Congrats on the awesome old door!

ReplyDeleteLove the headboard and plan on doing something similar for my daughter's room but I'm a bit paranoid about lead paint flakes falling on her so am keeping this project for when I can strip the paint off outside and then repaint it probably to end up looking the same as it started! Love your bedding too.

Beautiful! I've often thought about using an old door for a headboard but I've never seen one that was that symmetrical!

I love that the door is from your church! I like the idea of the molding across the top and painting out and distressing the whole thing. It would really look stunning... not sure about the lead paint issue though.
